14.1 Analyzing Detailed Models

4 minutesread

1. Open a detailed model in Revit.

2. Set thermal properties for building elements by using the Edit Type tool in Revit.  Glazing should have Analytical Properties assigned for each glazing type to be analyzed. Setting thermal properties for one glazing type will assign this to all instances of that type in the Revit project.

3. Open the application from the Revit Add-in Menu.

4. You may check the Energy Settings in Revit are correct for your project before opening the application.  An Energy Model will be created automatically in any event once the application is loaded.

5. Check settings in the Building Manager such as Location, Terrain, Building Use and Occupancy.  Calculate Solar Loads in the Building Manager.

6. In Performance, create an Energy Standard/Building Code for your project based on Site Location eg. create a Code based on an appropriate Building Code such as Ashrae 90.1 / 90.2 or UK TGD Part L.  If the project is to be located in the Middle East, Asia, Africa or Europe, create an appropriate Code to suit the appropriate country’s regulations.

7. Properties for building elements (walls, floors roofs etc) may be modified in Revit’s Edit Type by going to the Analytical Construction area in Edit Type or by going to the Element assembly and by modifying the layers and materials.  Generic Walls and Floors for example should have material layers set so that thermal properties are assigned in Revit.

Anytime that these properties are changed, they will be read by the application and the results will update.  Please click on the Refresh button on the Dashboard to update the results.

8. Windows may be added to solid walls (this uses the application’s window family) or Curtain Walls may be generated on the Revit model.  It will be necessary to recalculate the Solar Loads after Window and Curtain Wall generation (see Section 7.5 and Section 7.6).

9. Custom Groups may be created in Façades to make a collection of specific Surfaces that are critical for analysis (see Section 7.7.3)
10. A Report (Snapshot) may be created if results need to be saved for review.  If modifications are made to the model and glazing is adjusted, a further Report may be created for comparison.
11. Windows which have no thermal properties or that need to be assigned properties for which Revit does not provide precise values, may be allocated properties using the Update Glazing button where values may be input manually or products selected from the Guardian list.  These values will be used by the application in this project but are not written to the Revit model (see Section 7.8)

12. Windows may also be resized using the Resize button (see Section 7.9). Select a window in the details list first and this option will appear in the Toolbar.

13. Shading devices may be added to the detailed model such as the application’s shading family, mass objects as canopies/vertical fins or surrounding buildings which may have a shading effect.  The Solar Loads will need to be recalculated in the Building Manager (with the Shading Factors turned on) after these are added so that the effects can be included in the results.
