6.3 Applying Glazing to the Mass Model

3 minutesread

In Conceptual Mass models, the glazing percentage for the entire model may be set in Performance.  If individual Surfaces are subsequently modified, other Surfaces which remain unlocked may have their glazed areas also adjusted, as the system will try to maintain this overall percentage for the model.

Set Overall Glazing Percentage for the model here

For example, percentage glazing may be set to 40% for the entire model in Performance.

Setting 40% glazing for the entire model

A selection of Facades may then be set to 80% (eg. Facades 4 and 5 South)

Two Facades are set to 80%

The application will attempt to maintain the overall 40% setting for the model, while also accommodating the new 80% glazing on this selection of Surfaces.

In order to achieve this,  Facades/Surfaces that are unlocked (available for modification) may be adjusted to accommodate the new changes. By un-checking/deselecting Facades 4 and 5 South, you may review results for all Facades (the entire model).

When selected Surfaces are set to 80%, others (that not locked) may be adjusted down (eg. from 40% to perhaps 23.5%) in order to maintain the overall 40% for the model.  This will depend on how many surfaces are increased, the area of these Surfaces and their effect on the overall model.

Some Facades are 80%, others have reduced to 23.5%

For example, if only a small surface is set to 80%, this may not affect the remaining surfaces whose areas are larger.

The application will attempt to keep the overall 40% for the model by balancing out the total glazing percentage over the remaining Surfaces.  If enough Facades/Surfaces have their percentage raised enough or if some Facades/Surfaces are locked – this will force the overall value to adjust.

Note: Only Surfaces that are unlocked will be assigned a new percentage area.  Surfaces that have been locked will not be affected and will remain at the value that was set.  If you wish to maintain a percentage or setting for a specific Façade/Surface, it should be locked to prevent changes.

If enough Surfaces are then also raised to 80%, there will come a point where it will not be possible to maintain the overall 40% total any longer.  The remaining Surfaces will be adjusted, and the overall percentage itself, may have to fall.   The figure in the Performance  area will then also be adjusted to reflect this.

3 Facades are raised to 80%, others are unlocked and will reduce therefore
Note that these 3 Facades have caused others that were unlocked to reduce to zero

To avoid the glazing percentage setting being adjusted on a Facade/Surface – it may be locked to maintain its settings.  See Section 6.2.3.6 above.

Note: Please refer to Section 13.1 below (Mass Workflow 1.) for a sample workflow on Applying Glazing Percentages to the Mass Models.

Note: If you wish to modify the model geometry while Guardian Glass for BIM is open, it is best practice to close the application, make the changes in Revit and when ready, relaunch the application.  This will allow a new Energy Model to be created and results to be updated.
